Computer storage is the system of hardware and software that provides data access through files, databases, or other digital media. Data can be stored on any type of physical media such as a hard drive, flash memory card, or CD-ROM. Computer storage may also include less tangible forms like electricity in cloud computing services.
Computer storage is either volatile or non-volatile – meaning it will lose all its data after power to the device is interrupted. Non-volatile computer storage includes CDs and DVDs while volatile computer storage includes RAM (Random Access Memory) chips found in desktop computers and mobile devices such as smartphones and iPads/iPods.
